It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

I just wanted to pop by and offer some kudos to Artwork by Angie who is surpassed herself yet again with more rebranding work for Little Sugar Plums.
It will soon be looking a lot like Christmas at Little Sugar Plums HQ with my new festive web banners, tabs and logo and my parcels will also be getting a festive makeover too with new swing tags, postcards and business cards.

Today marks just three months away until Christmas day... That's only three paydays for most people!  The weather this morning is thick with fog and I can barely see the end of my garden.  Winter is certainly settling in.

Stay tuned for my festive makeover coming soon across my facebook page, website, blog and etsy shop :)

We have a winner!!!

Wow I'm so proud of my little page and how much support I am receiving from all of my followers and likers of my Facebook page.  So many of you shared the giveaway and commented on the competition post.  I am truly grateful.

There were so many lovely comments, and also some really sad ones about poorly children.  I wish I could give a doll to everyone.  It was so hard to choose, so the easiest and fairest thing to do was to put all the names in a hat and drawer one out at random..

I wrote down the names of everyone who completed all four steps to enter the giveaway competition and my son, Oliver folded all the pieces of paper, put them into a hat (or rather an Ikea storage tub!) and shuffled them all about.

Amelia was bathed and ready for bed but woke up a bit when she saw what we were doing and wanted to help too, so she picked a piece out....

And we discovered the winner was.......

 Michelle Dann!!!

Congratulations Michelle!!!!  I will contact you about your prize shortly.

Thank you to everyone for taking part. xxx

What's so Special about Handmade?

Some of you will have read this on other blogs and pages, but I'm posting again as I feel it's something that quite often gets ignored.  It's quite long, but worth taking the time to read (I think so anyway).
Someone recently asked here, "What's so special about handmade?"

 Among the responses were

"Because people are putting their heart and soul into creating something special",

"Because you're buying something that you simply can't get on the high street" ,

"It's knowing that you're supporting a person, not a massive corporation".

People are not only passionate about SELLING handmade, but also BUYING handmade. Why then, do so many expect that because it's handmade, it should be cheap?

"I don't understand why a doll costs £35.00 when I can buy one in {insert cheap high street shop} for £5.00".

Here's why:

There is a basic formula in business for pricing:
Cost of materials + (hourly rate x time taken) + 20% = wholesale price
Wholesale price + 30-50% = min/max retail price

So, if for example a 16" cushion costs £4 in materials and takes 45 minutes to make and the seller has given themself a (very reasonable) £10.00 per hour wage, the costs would be so:
£4.00 + (10 x 0.75) + 20% = £13.80 wholesale price
£13.80 + 30-50% = £17.94 (min) / £20.70 (max) retail price

When you take these figures into consideration you start to wonder how on earth some retailers can sell these cushions for £8.00! Well, then you start to get into a whole new issue relating to fair trade / sweat shops, etc. which is a whole other issue and not really the point I'm trying to make!

My point is to highlight that the honest, hardworking small business owner in this wonderful cottage industry that has been born and nurtured in the last few years, simply cannot compete with these prices. We rely on YOU, the consumer, to place a higher value on the "Handmade in Britain" items. These people are your neighbours, your friends, your aunts, uncles who simply want to earn an honest living doing something they love. With government benefits being discussed daily in the press, and so many families having their helping hands taken away from them, these people should be applauded for actually doing something about it and creating a job for themselves! But we can't survive without YOU.

When you visit these wonderful businesses and see something you absolutely fall in love with, you fall in love with it for a reason - it's had someone's heart and soul poured into it. We're not trying to close the high street down - far from it! And we're not trying to make you spend money unnecessarily. But we are trying to educate customers on the costs we are faced with.

Designer fabrics which I must use to comply with the CE marking process is at least £12 a metre (some fabrics even reach £35 a metre). I have to spend time researching fabrics which goes in to designing each doll I make. I spend time discussing the intricate details of custom orders to ensure I produce something perfect for you that will be cherished for years to come.  This all takes time, and is one of the parts of the job I love the most.

Then there's gas, electric and water, all of which are needed in the dolly-making process.  Not to mention the hours of time it takes to CE test a doll, produce declaration of conformity documents, print them out using god knows how much ink and store them in various files at additional cost to myself.
Then there's the photography aspect... the expensive DSLR camera that I use, memory cards. props etc and time spent photographing dolls to give the consumer the best photos of my products that will stand up on a screen so they can see the details that go into to every piece of my work.
All of this takes SO much time!

There's also the little details that I put in, such as the FREE dolly birth certificates, the delicately wrapped tissue paper packaging, stickers, postcards, business cards....

So the next time you're faced with a quote/price tag that surprises you, instead of thinking "Gosh, that's too expensive", turn your mind to thinking "Wow, that must be really good quality and take ages to make!"

My personalised, handmade, bespoke Little Sugar Plum dolls  that I sell for £35 'should' have a minimum retail price of £71.76.... Just saying....

NEW LOOK!

Oh happy days!!  I don't think I have ever felt this happy!  Not only did my new embroidery machine just arrive with no additional import fees to be paid, but look what just landed in my email inbox... My new rebranding package!!

Little Sugar Plums has had a complete rebrand resulting in a brand new look! The package was designed by Artwork by Angie and was inspired by my dolls and clothing lines, Gisela Graham's Strawberry Patch, which I LOVE and my favourite fabric range; Little Red Riding Hood cottons by Tasha Noel for Riley Blake. It has resulted in a design which I am just so in love with!

So far I have changed my etsy shop banner and my blog.  Facebook and my website is going to take some time tough so I think I will leave it until I have a whole afternoon to work on them.  I apologise in advance for clogging up everyone's facebook newsfeed as I have designed my own coordinating album covers too so there will be a LOT of photos to upload!

I'd love to hear your comments.  What do you think?

Brother SE400

This post is on my experience in importing a Brother SE400 from the USA to UK.  Hopefully it may be of help to someone as I have found it quite a popular machine in the UK and definitely the cheaper option when purchasing a Brother embroidery machine.  The UK equivalent to the Brother SE400 is the Innovis 950.

For the past 3 years I have been using a basic Janome 2032.  While it is a fantastic machine, and great if you're on a budget, with the amount of sewing I do, I thought it was time for an upgrade.  I also wanted something that I could use embroidery on, as personalisation is becoming more popular with my customers when buying my Little Sugar Plum dolls.  I thought an embroidery machine would be the way forward and cut time spent on hand embroidering. However I found it daunting knowing which one to buy, and the cost of some of them was extortionate!

The machine I have had my eye on for some time was the Brother Innovis 950, however with a £799 price tag it was just out of my budget.  I came across the Frister + Rossmann  404 on Amazon which I very nearly bought as it was so cheap in comparison and did alphabet stitches.  However I had money in my paypal account that I didn't want to wait 5 days to transfer before being able to buy on Amazon (WHY don't Amazon accept Paypal??!).  Plus when I saw what the alphabet stitches looked like, I wasn't that impressed with it. So back to eBay I went which is where I found a UK seller selling a Brother SE400 for £655.  I googled it to see how much it was new and found that it was actually only $339.99 on Amazon.com (about £215.00).  I couldn't believe the UK eBay seller was selling her used one for three times as much!

I did some more research and came across this great thread on the Baby Centre forum.  It was full of ladies talking about how they had imported their SE400 from the USA from Amazon and I got some great advice on there. I found that a USA to UK converter would be needed to overcome the voltage difference, but even after factoring that in, it would still be cheaper than buying in the UK. When I looked into it though, I found that Amazon were no longer shipping internationally.  I decided to go back to eBay and type in the model number to see if any others came up and was delighted to find a seller in California who shipped to the UK! So that was that!  I had to have it!  After reading all the description, terms and conditions, etc and my mouse hovered over the BUY NOW button for a few minutes, I finally clicked on it!  I had just ordered my first computerised sewing/embroidery machine!

Here's a little bit about the machine's features:

  • 67 built-in sewing stitches: Including utility, quilting, heirloom and decorative stitches.
  • 70 built-in embroidery designs: Including floral, holiday, animal and kids' designs. Plus, 120 built-in frame patterns, and 5 built-in fonts.
  • 4"x4" embroidery area: The perfect size for adding decorative accents to home decor, gifts, and clothing.
  • Easy-to-use LCD touch screen display: View your built-in embroidery designs, lettering, frames and editing functions, as well as your built-in sewing stitches.
  • Design editing features: Rotate, mirror-images, increase and decrease the size of your designs
  • Computer connectivity for importing designs and updating your machine: Import designs purchased from ibroidery.com and other web sites. (USB cable included)
  • Easy threading, with automatic needle threader: Simply follow the threading diagram printed on the machine, then have the needle threaded for you, with the touch of a lever.
  • Super easy bobbin winding system: Once you have the thread in place, just move the bobbin to the right, push Start, and the bobbin is wound for you.
  • Reliable, easy-to-use Quick Set drop-in bobbin
  • Built-in tutorials: View tutorials on how to use the SE400's sewing and embroidery functions, right on the LCD touch screen display.
  • iBroidery.com compatible: Choose from thousands of licensed and limited edition, downloadable designs, available for purchase on www.ibroidery.com

The only difference between the SE400 and the Innovis 950 is that the SE400 has a USB cable for downloading designs to the machine rather than a memory stick. It also has an embroidery card slot for use with other Brother cartridges.

So now I had ordered the machine I needed to look into the voltage adapters.  This is when I stumbled upon the fabulous Brother SE400 Enthusiast blog by the lovely Kamala Kelly.  Her blog is fantastic and well worth a look if you are new to the SE400, or are thinking of buying one.  She also has a You Tube channel with some very informative videos and a Facebook page, Kamala's Embroidery. Kamala gave me some great advice regarding the voltage when I asked her about the adapter. I hope this might be of use to others who is looking for an adapter...

The Brother SE400 has the following voltage supply:

    120v
    60hz
0.67 amps (needed to check the capacity of the transformer)

I did a bit of shopping around and found this one from Amazon, which I was pleased to find some reviews from people who also had the SE400!

It is a little on the expensive side, but when I've spent this much on a sewing machine, I didn't want a cheapy one that would burn out.  Especially as I would be using it a lot.  And the cost was still way under the £799 Innov 950! I ordered this one at 2pm yesterday and it arrived at 8:30am this morning.

If this is your first time at buying an embroidery machine, like me.  Here's some other handy tips I've been given/found on my path to embroidery:

    1.  You need to use a backing stabiliser underneath the fabric before attaching to your hoop.  There are thousands available (try eBay).  Some are iron-on and some needs to be sprayed with spray mount. There are also different thicknesses.  Generally the heavier the fabric you are using, the heavier the stabiliser you will need. - Mariejoy over at MJMakes

    2. However tempting it is to buy cheap threads from eBay or other sites online, DON'T. They will probably break when the machine embroiders at high speed, some are not colour fast and will run when washed and generally they don't embroider to the high quality you would expect. Go for a good quality and your work will speak for itself.

Some good brands are Madeira and Gutermann Sulky Rayon for Embroidery machines. There is also a cheaper option; a brand called Marathon which is apparently colourfast and good quality.  I cannot comment on this, having never used it, this is only based on recommendations from the research I have done, although I did win a bundle of 30 different coloured Marathon reels on eBay last night for £13.99! I also bought a set of Gutermann embroidery thread so I will let you know what they're both like when I've used them.

    3. Titanium needles do not heat up when they're stitching fast.  Sometimes with regular needles the glue from the stabiliser can make for sticky needles, so titanium ones are a good option.  Again, I haven't used them yet so cannot comment.  I will write post after I get my machine with my findings though! The size is going to depend on what type of material you are embroidering on. The smaller the number, the thinner the needle will be. So if you are embroidering something thick, such as denim, you will want a needle such as a 16. Thinner fabrics would require a size 12 or 14 needle.

    4.  Embroidery machines are calibrated to use a thinner bobbin thread than what is used on the top. The top thread is normally 40wt and EM bobbin thread is 60wt as recommended in the manual.  Pre-wound bobbins are readily available online.

I spent all evening yesterday searching for embroidery and applique designs.  It's the applique I am most looking forward to making.  I have so many ideas of things to make for my children and no time to make them as i'm always making dolls for other people.  I think I will have to cut back on the custom orders for a while soon.

There are tonnes of free embroidery designs on the internet.  Just google "Free embroidery designs" and see where it takes you. I have also found these websites useful for some lovely designs.

    Urban Threads

    Applique Momma

    Little Applique Factory

    Designs by Ju Ju

    Sweet Peas Place

    GG Designs Embroidery

There must be tonnes more out there I haven't discovered yet.  Do you know of any that you could recommend to me?

All that's left is just to wait the 10-14 days for it to arrive!  I'm so excited!  I have been eagerly tracking it's travels online! Lol.

    Easter Market Night

    Easter Market Night

    Tuesday 19th March 2013 at 9:00pm
I will be holding my monthly market night on Tuesday 19th March 2013 at 9:00pm GMT. This will be held over on my Facebook page. Anything not sold on the night will be for sale on my website www.littlesugarplums.com

    Busy Busy Busy!

This month has been a very busy one for me.  I was busy CE marking my new doll which is made from a pattern I developed myself.  She is slightly bigger at 16" tall and is more cuddly.  I am pleased to say she passed and I made up my first three Sugar Plum fairies with my pattern.  Here's my first one with no clothes..

And this is her complete with tutu..

I then went to make a custom order, Jersey Beau; another Sugar Plum fairy for a little girl's second birthday....  I think she's my favourite so far!

And this fairy is leaving me today to go on sale at Cloggies Toys... More about that below...

You may have read on my Facebook page about the toy shop, Cloggies, I visited recently; well I went back there on Saturday and dropped off my dolls which are going to be sold in the shop. Rory, Bluebell and Gweneth are now for sale there.  I'm not sure if they will be available to purchase on their website, but I will find out.

Cloggies is such a lovely shop; Full of traditional and unique toys that you won't find in regular toy shops.  I'm so proud to have my dolls for sale there. :)

Also last week was the Easter showcase that I participated in over at Purkilicious. My Easter doll sold within 10 minutes of the showcase opening which I was very pleased about! This doll has also been entered into the March Challenge over at Creative Connections. The theme was Occassions (Easter, Birthdays, Parties) and I think my Rosie Ribbon doll fits in quite well to that category!

Tomorrow evening is my Easter market night, so I will be spending this afternoon finshing up one last dolly and some little outfits before cracking on with custom orders.  I have 19 to complete over the next couple of weeks!  I think  am in for a few more late nights!

Have a good week everyone and happy crafting!

    The Adventures of Cecilia Spark

I am incredibly proud of my latest achievement!A few weeks ago  I received an order from the wonderful, talented Ngaire Elder; author of The Adventures of Cecilia Spark. She asked me to make her a doll to replicate her character Cecilia! What an honour!

I based the doll around book one: The Adventures of Cecilia Spark: The Brimstone Forest.  And here she is with her pal, Soldier the Mouse, already to be shipped to her new home in Spain...

I received the most beautiful email from Ngaire when Cecilia arrived with her. You can't believe how much this has made me smile this evening...

    Dear Aimie

I collected my Cecilia Spark Doll from the newsagents today and I was stunned .... she is fantastic; identical to her picture on the cover of Book One, The Brimstone Forest. And, Soldier the Mouse is so darn cute. I didn't realise the doll would be such a generous size, just perfect.
When I was in the shop Peter Maddocks was there collecting his mail and he waited to see what was in the parcel; he is over the moon. He says you have done a wonderful job.

The quality of the materials you have used and your craftwork is very high. Thank you, Aimie, for bringing Cecilia Spark to life ... she will inspire me to write lots more adventures.

    kindest regards

      Ngaire

I can't believe Peter Maddocks saw it too! I've been a fan of his since The Family Ness in the 80's! HUGE HUGE proud moment for me and I feel so honoured working with such talented people. I can't explain how happy I am right now!

Ngaire also sent me this lovely photo of Cecilia in her new home.  It looks like she's enjoying the Spanish sunshine!

After she sent this, I received two more orders for Cecilia Spark dolls... one from the talented illustrator Peter Maddocks and one from Ruth Watson, authour of the Voxian series! I will stop grinning soon honest!
